DIY Coffee Coolata (Frozen Coffee Malt)

Jump to Recipe

This creamy and malted DIY Coffee Coolatta is one of those perfect copycat recipes to keep in your recipe box for those days you want something sweet, cold, and completely refreshing! This recipe was created in collaboration with Highground Instant Coffee!

Why you'll love it

This malted iced coffee coolatta is an easy way to cool down and get your caffeine fix at the same time. It has a delicious vanilla malt flavor that gives you all the nostalgic vibes that make you want to do a little happy dance (and have the energy to keep it up throughout the day!) All you need are a few ingredients and a blender before you are sipping on the perfect summer coffee drink.

Ingredients

The ingredient list for this DIY Coffee Coolatta is short and sweet. You can find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.

ingredients to make the drink
  • Highground Instant Coffee - To make this drink amazing, you need a high quality instant coffee. Highground coffee is organic, fair trade, and is still very budget-friendly. It also gives the best overall flavor profile for the drink compared to other brands.
  • Malt powder - Malt powder is sweet and nostalgic. You can use any malt powder you can find. Chocolate malt powder would be a fun alternative to try out!
  • Simple syrup - Vanilla simple syrup is great to add a bit of sweetness and use the vanilla to round out the flavor of the malt powder. You can also try using brown sugar simple syrup, or make one using malt powder in it.
  • Heavy cream - The best part about the drink is the malty cream on top. Heavy cream with a touch of powdered sugar and malt powder makes the perfect finish to the coffee coolatta.
  • Toppings - Get creative with the toppings! You can use crushed caramel, more coffee powder, or crushed shortbread cookies (my personal favorite)

How to make

Making this frozen iced coffee is incredibly easy. Everything gets added to a blender and it will do all the work for you. If you don't have a blender, a food processor or anything that can blend/crush up ice with the ingredients will work.

adding ingredients to blender
  • 1. Grab all your ingredients and measure them out.
  • 2. Add everything into your blender.
  • 3. Blend until it all comes together into a frozen drink.
  • 4. Pour into your cups.
  • 5. Whip up the heavy cream and top the beverages with it. Sprinkle on any additional toppings as desired.

Expert tips

If you are like me and enjoy a very strong coffee, add another tablespoon of Highground Instant Coffee.

There are a few types of malt powder. Use the one you would normally buy to make the drinks you had as a child for a truly delicious and nostalgic drink.

If you are adding toppings like crushed cookies, I recommend toasting them with a small amount of butter to enhance the flavor even more. A pinch of malt powder added to the mix will also be delicious.

FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes and no. You can blend everything together and save the whipped topping until ready to serve. The ice will eventually melt, but you can pour everything into ice cubes and freeze it. When ready to drink, add everything back into the blender then add a little more liquid and blend. To keep the drink from tasting diluted, I would add a touch more Highground instant coffee and malt powder into the blender when blending for the second time.

Can I use something other than malt powder?

You can omit the malt powder or use anything with a similar flavor profile. It is all up to personal tastes.
